Twitter Mexico yesterday suspended an undetermined number of accounts, including several of people related to the movement headed by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, in a measure that is justified as an action to prevent “manipulation of the platform.”
The blockade was carried out a day after President López Obrador assured that a former PAN adviser held a management position on Twitter Mexico.
Among the blocked accounts are those of @Miriam_June , @LOVREGA and @ElReyTuitero , active followers of the movement headed by López Obrador.
Twitter Mexico assured last night that it will not allow “spam or any other type of manipulation of the platform.” He added: “We define manipulation as the use of Twitter to carry out massive, high intensity or deceptive actions that confuse people or hamper their experience.”
“The suspension of accounts of tweeters and tweeters related to the # 4T project is of great concern. Free expression is an essential pillar of our Constitution and a fundamental principle of the process of change we are undergoing, ”wrote Alfonso Durazo, former federal secretary of Security and Citizen Protection and Morena’s candidate for the government of Sonora, on that platform.
López Obrador said Wednesday that Twitter’s director of public policy for Mexico and Latin America, Hugo Rodríguez Nicolat, was an advisor to a famous PAN senator and participated in Felipe Calderón’s transition team in 2006.
Twitter Mexico responds to López Obrador: “spokesmen do not make decisions”
“It is unfortunate to see comments directed at our employees as the sole responsible for the decisions or rules of the company,” the social network responded to the president’s accusations against Hugo Rodríguez Nicolat.
Hours after President Andrés Manuel López Obrador exhibited the director of Twitter Mexico and Latin America, Hugo Rodríguez Nicolat, pointing out that he was a “militant or sympathizer” of the National Action Party (PAN), the social network regretted that its employees are believed to be responsible for its policies.
In a thread of four messages written by the @TwitterMexico account on Twitter, released afternoon this Wednesday, it was written:
“No person on Twitter is responsible, alone, for our compliance policies or actions, and it is regrettable to see comments directed at our employees as solely responsible for company decisions or rules,” he said in a first post.
In the second, he noted: “It is important to remember that Twitter spokespersons do not make compliance decisions. And they do not participate in the review process of the same. This occurs in a collegiate process, based on rules, processes, not on particular interests ”.
Later, he stated: “The job of our spokespersons is only to share decisions with the public and answer questions. And ours is to have teams that have a relevant and diverse trajectory to objectively meet the requirements of each position ”.
Finally, it was justified: “As we have mentioned before, we reiterate that we will continue to be transparent about our policies, their evolution and their application, while always taking care of the safety of our employees.”
These messages had many reactions from users, including one who replied: “Ok, Hugo.” And it was replicated by other people who added “X2” to their comments, which means that the previous person’s sentence is repeated without having to type it again.
Okay. Hugo.- Junia (@Miriam_Junne)
And although there were people who supported Twitter, expressed their opposition to López Obrador, and even asked that the president’s account be blocked, others continued to attribute Twitter Mexico’s comments on Twitter to the manager Hugo Rodríguez Nicolat.
Or of those who wonder why he recommends messages and accounts of haters against the current government.
What did AMLO say about Twitter?
“The director of Twitter Mexico was a militant or very close sympathizer of the PAN, the one who currently manages Twitter, was even an advisor to a very famous senator of the PAN and since my chest is not a cellar … However, we only hope that he does his job in a professional way, that they do not promote the creation of bot farms, “said López Obrador at the morning press conference this Wednesday, January 18.
Although he identified him as a “director”, the LinkedIn file that he exhibited at the morning conference indicates that Rodríguez Nicolat is responsible for the Public Policy of Twitter for Mexico and Spanish-speaking Latin America.
He mentioned that Rodríguez Nicolat was an advisor to the PAN senator –who did not give his name–, from 2004 to 2005, director of logistics for Felipe Calderón’s transition team from September to November 2006, “that is, when Calderón enters” the government, that is, he coordinated the reception of more than 700 guests to the Calderón protest and “management of human resources, assignment, location according to needs,” he said.
He also said that he was director of inter-institutional relations for the National Institute of Migration from December 2006 to September 2007, during which time he coordinated the INM with non-governmental organizations, academic groups, and other institutions.
In addition, he moderated the Citizen Council of the National Institute of Migration and the Inter-institutional Roundtable on Unaccompanied Girls, Boys and Adolescents, and Pregnant Women.
“This is important because not only institutions or organizations or say Twitter or Face, but to see who runs these institutions, who they are, because you who are journalists know that it is very, very difficult to have neutrality, it is very difficult in journalism objectivity, get that. So, there is nothing to be ashamed of, the only thing is that we know who is who ”, he considered.
