Deaths from Covid-19 amounted to about 109,000 cases between January and August 2020, revealed a preliminary count by the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (Inegi). This figure is 45% higher than the just over 75,000 deaths reported in the same period by the Secretary of Health of the Andrés Manuel López Obrador government (AMLO).
In this way, the institute ranked Covid-19 as the second cause of death in Mexico with 16% of deaths in the country only in the first eight months of 2020, only after heart diseases that occupied a proportion of 21%, informed Julio Santaella, president of Inegi.
To obtain this number of deaths from Covid-19, substantially higher than that reported at the time by the Ministry of Health, led by Jorge Alcocer, Inegi built its database of deaths registered in Mexico, taking into account the data provided by the Civil Registry, Forensic Medical Services and agencies of the Public Ministry.
In this way, the institute counted cases in which the virus was identified, but also those suspects in which the disease could not be expressly identified. The final information will be obtained after comparing the figures from the Ministry of Health and will be published next October.
In a radio interview for Grupo Fórmula, Héctor Hernández, a researcher at UNAM, who has monitored the figures, indicated that although Inegi expanded the panorama on deaths from Covid-19, it still did not manage to describe the magnitude of the black figure , that is, all deaths that have not been accounted for due to various causes.
The researcher indicated that Inegi registered deaths that did not enter the database of the Ministry of Health due to information lags. But the data on misclassified cases has yet to be included.
Covid-19, the disease with the most deaths among adults 25 to 64 years of age
Among the findings of Inegi on these new mortality data in Mexico, it was found that Covid-19 is the most lethal disease for adults between 25 and 64 years of age. This between January and August 2020.
Covid-19 became the third leading cause of death among adults between 25 and 34 years of age. In this segment, deaths from the disease caused by the new coronavirus were only surpassed by homicides and accidents. In this way, Covid-19 was the most lethal disease for this group of young adults.
Meanwhile, for adults between 35 and 64 years old, Covid-19 was the leading cause of death, surpassing homicides, heart disease, and even diabetes.
This shows the impact among a segment of adults who are not considered elderly. Covid-19 was only the third leading cause of death among adults over 64 years of age.
It is worth mentioning that in all age groups, Covid-19 remained among the top 10 deaths in Mexico. For infants under one year it was the seventh leading cause of death with 117 deaths, even surpassing malnutrition.
Among children between 1 and 4 years old, Covid-19 ranked sixth with 81 deaths. For the group between 5 and 9 years of age, it was the seventh cause with 49 deaths.
Meanwhile, for the group between 10 and 14 years old – the least affected – it was the eighth leading cause of death with 68 deaths. While people between 15 and 24 years was the sixth cause with 557 deaths.
