Mexico is ready to support the US after interruption of supply chains due to pandemic

The head of the agency pointed out that the North American trade agreement, TMEC, is a great tool for the recovery after Covid-19.


The Secretary of Economy, Tatiana Clouthier, said this Friday, Feb. 26th, that Mexico is willing to support the request of the President of the United States, Joe Biden, to review the problems of interruption of supply chains, affected by the coronavirus pandemic.

In a statement, the agency reported that during a virtual meeting with the US Secretary of State, Antony Blinken, the official commented that the North American trade agreement , T-MEC, is a great tool for recovery after Covid-19.

“Both secretaries shared their concern about the disruption of supply chains worldwide as an effect of the Covid-19 pandemic and pledged to continue evaluating its operation in their respective countries in order to jointly strengthen value chains in North America. In addition, they promised to work hand in hand to consolidate regional competitiveness ”, according to the document.

Meanwhile, Secretary Blinken, added the agency, agreed with Clouthier that the T-MEC constitutes an effective tool for economic recovery and the strengthening of productive chains in the region.

“Both undertook to promote work on competitiveness within the framework of the Treaty and highlighted the importance of continuing with the work of implementing it, which, almost eight months after its entry into force, is progressing favorably,” he added.

Clouthier, according to the bulletin, conveyed President Andrés Manuel López Obrador’s commitment to continue working on the integration of North America and his confidence in the T-MEC.

“He stressed that one of the main lessons of the pandemic is that collaboration is the best way to move forward and move forward as neighbors, allies and business partners.”

Finally, the secretariat assured that said meeting responds to the intention of both secretaries to establish a constant dialogue “to deepen our regional integration and promote the dynamism of our commercial relations.”

The meeting between Clouthier and Antony Blinken is part of the American’s “virtual visits” to Mexico and Canada to discuss relevant issues with both nations without exposing themselves to the pandemic.

“The virtual journey … puts everyone’s health and safety first while demonstrating the importance of our relationship with our neighbors and some of our closest partners,” State Department spokesman Ned Price declared on Friday, February 26th.
