This Monday afternoon, around 6:15 p.m., the Cuernavaca metropolitan area, along with the municipalities of Jiutepec and Temixco, faced a day of intense rain and hail, causing damage such as fallen trees, flooding, and accidents.
According to the meteorological website Infometeoro, it was a severe storm with winds of 70 km/h, abundant hail, and rain. The storm developed in approximately 30 minutes, which was too rapid, hence the severity of the damage.
In Cuernavaca, the rains caused trees to fall in several neighborhoods, including Adolfo Ruiz Cortínez Avenue, Acapantzingo, Granjas, and Vista Hermosa, according to reports from SEPRAC and the Fire Department. Crews worked to remove branches to restore traffic. Other affected areas included Santa María Ahuacatitlán, Palmira, Ricardo Flores Magón, Domingo Diez Avenue, San Cristóbal, Bellavista, Maravillas, and Del Bosque, where flooding was reported.
On the Cuernavaca-Acapulco Highway, at km 99 southbound, a tree fell, causing heavy traffic in the area while it was being removed.
A rollover accident was also reported on the Cuernavaca Express Pass, heading toward Mexico City, past the IMSS exit in Plan de Ayala, blocking traffic in the center lanes and causing heavy traffic.
Jiutepec, for its part, also suffered the effects of the rains, with fallen trees reported on Doctores Avenue (near the Casillas subdivision), in front of the Rintex factory (on the Camino Viejo a San Gaspar road), and in front of Los Hornos (in the Calera Chica neighborhood), according to Civil Protection information. In addition, power outages were reported in the Vista Hermosa, Lomas de Jiutepec, Huizachera, and La Laja neighborhoods, attributed to the intensity of the rain. This municipality was the one that recorded the most hail, according to videos posted on social media.
In the CIVAC Towers, a car was trapped in the flood; firefighters responded to assist in the rescue efforts.
An accident involving Route 18 on Doctores Avenue was also reported. A wooden pole and a tree fell on three cars on the Tejalpa-Zacatepec highway, near the Calera Chica neighborhood.
In Temixco, a tree fell in the Acatlipa main square, as well as another on the bridge leading to the Burgos neighborhood. Power outages were also reported in some neighborhoods.
