The deputy of the Congress of Morelos, Gabriela Marin, has been assassinated this Wednesday, October 5th, in an armed attack in the municipality of Cuernavaca, according to the State Commission of Public Security of the Mexican State. According to the message, shared through social networks, the Morelos police have implemented a search operation to find those allegedly responsible for an event that has also left an injured person.
The Morelos prosecutor, Uriel Carmona, has indicated that the attackers were in the back of the Cuernavaca pharmacy where Marin went to buy medicine. “When she got out of her vehicle, one of the crew members fatally injures her,” Carmona said. The prosecutor has assured that the Prosecutor’s Office is coordinated with the Secretary of National Defense (Sedena), the National Guard, and with the State Commission of Public Security to carry out the investigations.
The governor of Morelos, Cuauhtemoc Blanco, has condemned the murder of the deputy through his Twitter account. “A security operation has been deployed in order to find those responsible,” Blanco stressed. The governor has assured that the State will not allow “attacks that harm” Morelos society. Blanco has sent his support to the legislator’s family and friends.
Gabriela Marin took office as a deputy in the Morelos Congress on July 15 to replace the late Juan Jose Yanez, who died of medical complications. Marin disputed the position with Roberto Carlos Yanez, a PRD politician, who intended to occupy the seat by falsely registering as an LGBT+ candidate. Marin, who had been in the post for three months, was the only deputy from the Morelos Progresa formation in the public body.
The current legislature of the Congress of Morelos, chaired by Governor Cuauhtemoc Blanco, began on September 1, 2021, and will end on August 31, 2024. In this cycle, there are 20 deputies from nine different formations.
Marin had a law degree and another in education. In the last 18 years, the representative of Morelos Progresa held various public positions at the Autonomous University of the State of Morelos, according to the records of the Mexican State Congress.
Condeno el cobarde asesinato de la diputada local Gabriela Marín. Se ha desplegado el operativo de seguridad a fin de dar con los responsables. En Morelos no vamos a permitir ataques que vulneren a nuestra sociedad.
