20-year-old gunned down in Morelos

EMILIANO ZAPATA, Morelos — A 20-year-old student balancing his higher education with part-time employment was shot and killed outside a local bar on Sunday, July 5th moments after the conclusion of the highly anticipated 2026 FIFA World Cup Round of 16 match between Mexico and England.

The victim, identified as Jesús Ponce, was targeted outside an establishment named El Congelador, located in the metropolitan area of Cuernavaca. According to preliminary reports, an armed group arrived at the scene and opened fire directly at the premises, striking Ponce as he stood just outside the entrance.

Emergency medical services and local security forces rushed to the scene following frantic calls from witnesses. However, paramedics were unable to revive the youth and confirmed his death at the scene.

A Community in Mourning

Ponce’s family and friends expressed deep outrage not only over his sudden death but also over the handling of the scene by state authorities. Due to rain and subsequent bureaucratic delays, the victim’s body remained on the wet asphalt outside the bar for several hours before forensic investigators completed initial field processing and transferred his remains to the State Medical Forensic Service (Semefo).

By Monday afternoon, grieving relatives turned to social media to voice their frustration, stating that they were still waiting at the offices of the Morelos State Attorney General’s Office (FGE) to have his body released.

“He worked there strictly to pay for his school supplies and stay in his studies,” a relative posted online, highlighting the frustration shared by many local youth facing the region’s security crisis.

Heightened Tensions Following Match Disruptions

The shooting added to a string of violent incidents reported across south-central Mexico during the peak of World Cup celebrations. On the same night, a tense situation unfolded in a nearby sector when the former governor of Morelos and current federal legislator, Cuauhtémoc Blanco, reported that his family vehicle was surrounded, blocked, and vandalized by a crowd while attempting to commute toward the Mexico City Stadium for the same match.

As of Tuesday morning, the Morelos FGE has not announced a definitive motive for the attack on El Congelador, and no suspects have been detained. State investigators confirmed that ballistics evidence and security camera footage are being reviewed as part of an active homicide investigation.
