July 22: International Day Against Open-Pit Mining

Every July 22, the “International Day Against Open-Pit Mining” is commemorated. This initiative seeks to raise awareness about the harmful effects of this activity, also known as “mega-mining,” which impacts biodiversity and people’s quality of life.

The date originated from a citizen initiative launched in 2009 by activists in Mexico and Canada to highlight the serious ecological, social, and health impacts of this practice.

What is “mega-mining”?

According to the National Human Rights Commission (CNDH), open-pit mining is the extraction of natural resources from the surface of the land, rather than underground, such as copper, gold, and uranium.

This practice generates harmful and irreversible effects on the environment and the communities surrounding the areas where this activity takes place, which is often carried out in unfavorable working conditions for the miners who work there.
