The town of Ocotepec, in Cuernavaca, celebrated its patron saint, the Divine Savior, this Thursday, August 6, with traditional morning serenades, chinelos, Masses, and a community festival.
From early in the morning, the Parish of the Divine Savior began receiving religious offerings from communities such as Totolapan, San Tomás Ajusco, San Miguel Topilejo, Tres Marías, Chamilpa, Ahuatepec, and Huitzilac, as well as from jaripeo groups and taxi drivers.
The façade of the Parish of the Divine Savior was decorated with a floral arch created by the Ramos neighborhood, while inside, the image of the Divine Savior was surrounded by offerings from different towns and neighborhoods.
Little by little, each neighborhood and community arrived, accompanied by chinelo dance groups and band music, as they made their way through the streets.
Around the Parish of the Divine Savior, along the Cuernavaca-Tepoztlán highway, vendors set up their stalls starting Tuesday, August 4. Visitors could find fair bread, traditional sweets, food, snacks, beverages, fair games, and amusement rides, which will remain installed until Sunday, August 9.
Pyrotechnic Activities Suspended After Explosion
This year, following the explosion at the El Venado fireworks workshop in the town of Ocotepec, authorities decided to cancel the fireworks activities in solidarity with the Castro Nieto family. However, at the request of the local fireworks makers, it was ultimately decided to hold the traditional burning of the fireworks castle.
The celebration will conclude with a popular dance and the presentation of the candidates for the Independence Day festival queens.
For Friday, August 7, a jaripeo and dance are scheduled at 7:00 p.m., featuring Banda Única de Guerrero, Los Karkis, and bulls from Rancho El Capullo versus Las Estrellas del Jaripeo.
On Saturday, August 8, a horseback riding procession will take place at 4:30 p.m., followed by another jaripeo and dance at 7:00 p.m., featuring Banda La Nueva Estrella de Morelos and bulls from Rancho Tres Generaciones.
Finally, on Sunday, August 9, a traditional Sunday Mass will be held at 6:00 p.m., followed by a performance by the folkloric dance group “Tradición la Tlahuica de Chamilpa.”
